Complaint: Man barricaded, raped, assaulted woman at Woodbury house
Woodbury Minnesota 8420 City Centre Drive 55125

A Woodbury man was charged May 19 with barricading a woman inside his house for two days, where he allegedly beat and  raped her.

Police were called at 1:15 a.m. May 18 to a home in the 300 block of Leeward Trail, where they found a woman with injuries to her face and bruises up and down both arms.

Kneeling with his hands clasped behind him at the door was the suspect, Richard Jay Holmes. Empty vodka bottles were found strewn throughout the house, according to a criminal complaint.

After being hospitalized at Woodwinds Health Campus, the woman told police that the episode began on Friday, May 16, when she woke up to find the 31-year-old Holmes drinking and already intoxicated. He became agitated in the afternoon, when he started calling her names. He then began beating her in the face with a shoe, the complaint states.

The woman attempted to call 911 with her phone, but Holmes allegedly ripped it from her hands and kept it.

The complaint states Holmes passed out briefly, allowing the woman an escape attempt. Holmes woke up and allegedly grabbed the woman by the hair and punched her in the right eye.

Holmes then ordered the woman to stay on a loveseat, threatening her with more blows if she moved, the complaint states. He allegedly prevented her from leaving for the rest of the night.

When the woman awoke on Saturday, May 17, she found Holmes drinking again. The complaint states Holmes attempted to apologize, though the woman did not accept the apology.

After being rebuffed, Holmes allegedly raped the woman, threatening to hurt her if she resisted, the complaint states. More beatings occurred throughout the day, according to the complaint.

Holmes allegedly administered one last punch to the woman’s face before she demanded him to look at the damage he had inflicted, which prompted him to turn over her phone.

Holmes’ blood-alcohol content was 0.37 at the time of his arrest, according to the complaint.

He was charged with one count each of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, false imprisonment and third-degree assault.

Holmes was held on $250,000 bond at a May 21 arraignment. He returns to court on Wednesday, June 4.
