Child abduction attempt reported in Newport
Police are asking for the public's help in finding the suspect involved in a recent attempted child abduction near Newport Elementary School.
A fourth-grade girl who attends Newport Elementary told police she was walking home from school about 4 p.m. Friday, April 5, near Seventh Avenue and Ninth Street when a man drove by her and then parked and got out of his vehicle. The man yelled at her to get in the vehicle, Newport Police Chief Curt Montgomery said.
The girl, who was walking alone, refused and returned to Newport Elementary.
"She basically ran back to the school," Montgomery said.
The girl did not know the man.
The incident was not reported until Monday, April 8, due to a mix-up, according to police.
The suspect was described as a white male of thin build with light, curly brown hair. He was driving a newer, four-door midsize vehicle that was silver in color.
Anyone with information about the suspect or incident is asked to contact Newport police through the Washington County non-emergency dispatch line at 651-439-9381.
