For the first time, Century College will offer two classes at Woodbury High School as part of its expanding effort to connect with area residents. The courses also are available to interested high school students.

"Intercultural Communication" will be offered Thursday evenings from 6 to 9:50 p.m. from Sept. 18 to Dec. 11. Students will study cultural differences and how they affect communication. Topics include the role of culture in human behavior, cultural aspects of domestic and international business, issues in refugee/immigrant resettlement and intercultural relationships.

"Composition I" will be offered Monday evenings from 6 to 9:50 p.m. from Aug. 25 to Dec. 15. This college composition course emphasizes the expository essay, purposeful writing, selection and organization of material and fluency. Students will be introduced to citing and documenting outside sources.

"We are pleased that we are able to offer college classes so close to home for our residents," said South Washington County School District Superintendent Tom Nelson. "Lifelong learning is something we promote and believe in."

Century's fall course offerings at WHS are part of an outreach initiative anchored by an "Access and Opportunity" grant from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The $1.2 million grant, awarded to both Century and Inver Hills Community College, created a Center of Excellence that allows the colleges and their K-12 partners to help more students successfully advance from school to college.

Like any other college student, residents and high school students who want to take Century classes will need to take Century's placement test and register through the college.
