District 833 Superintendent Mark Porter said he intends to bring "closure" to the recent Spanish Immersion expansion debate when the School Board meets Thursday.

Porter said he will discuss the recent process regarding proposed expansion of the district's Spanish Immersion program. The process culminated last month in an at-times acrimonious community discussion about proposals to expand the district's Spanish Immersion program.

A task force proposal that involved the possible closure of a neighborhood elementary school alarmed parents and prompted them to picket outside school buildings and lobby School Board members through phone calls and e-mails.

The School Board, which was scheduled to make a decision Thursday on a plan to expand the Spanish Immersion program next year, backed off. Board members earlier this month decided, without a formal vote, to not pursue a major expansion next year. The Nuevas Fronteras immersion elementary school will remain at Crestview Elementary School, where it shares the building with traditional elementary classes.

Porter said he plans to talk Thursday with board members, in general terms, to bring about "closure" of the recent process.

"I believe this is about Round Four of the Spanish Immersion expansion process and we have yet to identify an acceptable solution," he said. "I don't want to raise expectations too high as to a different outcome."
