Baseball: Woodbury's Meyer blanks East Ridge with no-hitter
Ben Meyer has delivered on the mound all season for Woodbury.
“I don’t think I’ve seen it in my 11 years at Woodbury High School from either an opponent or our guys,” Royals coach Kevin McDermott said. “That’s a pretty rare deal. That’s a huge accomplishment for Ben and testament to what he’s done this year.”
Meyer already had a stellar season, compiling a 0.52 ERA and a 3-0 record going into the game. Moreover, Meyer takes the mound every time with lofty expectations.“Before every game, I tell myself I’m going to throw a no-hitter,” Meyer said. “It hasn’t happened before, but it’s what I strive to do, so it’s really good to get one.”The opponent makes Meyer’s achievement all the more impressive. East Ridge came in ranked No. 7 and 9-2 overall with Division I-bound players in their lineup.“To do it against East Ridge, cross-town rivals and the No. 7 team in the state, is just huge,” McDermott said.Logan Welch gave Meyer the initial support on offense with an RBI single despite having two strikes and the Royals having two outs in the in third inning. Jake Dickmeyer brought home the only run that the white-and-blue needed all day.Sebastian Holte-Mancera scored the first of two Royals runs in the sixth inning when Nick Yochum drove him home on a RBI triple. Nick McLaughlin had a sacrifice fly to bring home another run.Yochum went 2-3 along with the RBI, and both of his hits went for extra bases. Dickmeyer had a 2-2 day at the plate, and Welch hit 2-3. Welch also made a diving catch on fielding once to help preserve the no-hitter.“My teammates had my back the entire game, and they got it done, too,” Meyer said.Cal Stoehr took the loss for the Raptors, pitching six innings while fanning two batters and allowing just six hits.Raptors coach Brian Sprout knows well that his squad will have to face more Meyer-quality pitching to go far into May and June.“We’re going to see them every day,” Sprout said. This week the Royals will take on Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday during a busy slate of games.East Ridge rebounded with a 12-1 win over White Bear Lake on Saturday. Drew Molin earned the win pitching with three strikeouts in five innings.
