Bailey Nurseries fatal stabbing victim identified
Authorities on Friday released more information about the victim and suspect in the stabbing death at Bailey Nurseries as prosecutors prepare criminal charges.
The victim of the Thursday afternoon stabbing was Uriel N. Ortiz, 44, of Fridley, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Friday. Ortiz and the suspect, a 57-year-old St. Paul man, were both Bailey employees, according to the BCA and Newport Police Chief Curt Montgomery.
The death occurred in a work building near the nursery’s main office on Bailey Road, Montgomery said. Authorities were called there about 3:40 p.m. Thursday.
The suspect was the only person who was with Ortiz at the time of the stabbing, the BCA said. Ortiz bled to death at the scene, and the medical examiner determined he died of homicide.
The suspect fled the scene, but later turned himself in to St. Paul police. He was taken immediately to Regions Hospital with unspecified injuries before being booked into the Washington County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, according to jail records.
Authorities found a knife believed to have been used in the stabbing in St. Paul. Authorities said they do not believe it was a random crime, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The Washington County Attorney’s Office planned to file charges on Friday, a spokeswoman said.
The BCA was assisting in the investigation.
