For the second week in a row, on Feb. 11, the Afton Planning Commission was forced to cancel another meeting because of an empty table.

The public hearing, regarding a public hearing a therapeutic riding facility by the River Valley Riders, will be discussed on the March agenda since only two, Jim Fox and Richard Bend, of the seven member commission were in attendance.

This was the second time the public hearing had to be reschedule because of lack of quorum. The hearing was rescheduled from Feb. 2.

Commission chairman Fox says he understands that family commitments do come first, but he still finds it disappointing.

Fox wasn't the only one who finds this trend disappointing, several residents expressed how frustrated they are with the commissioners failing to follow through with their responsibilities.

"This isn't fair to those who came out here," Chuck Marohn, Afton city planner, said. "It's embarrassing to me and it's embarrassing to the city."

Marohn made a promise to the applicants and residents that if the March meeting gets canceled, he will take everyone out for dinner on him.

The Afton City Council will be appointing new commissioners at their Feb. 17 meeting, and hopefully they will have enough applicants, otherwise the commission might have to be downsized from nine to seven, council member Joe Richter.

The next planning commission meeting is March 2.
