Afton City Council reviews funding requests
Afton City Council reviewed two funding requests during its April 17 meeting.
"We receive so many requests," Mayor Pat Snyder said, "we have to decide where we draw the line."
Last month Afton City Council received a presentation form Mary Planten-Krell, the executive director of the Washington County Youth Service Bureau.
Planten-Krell outlined some of the services the YSB provides and requested City Council to consider providing funding. She informed City Council that $250 would be fair given the amount of services the city receives.
Two months ago, Afton City Council had also received a funding request from the Washington Historical Society.
However, City Council denied that funding request because the historical society does not pose any direct benefit to the city, Council Member Joe Richter said.
"Whereas YSB is a direct benefit to citizens," Richter said, "We don't see a lot from the historical society."
Council Member Randy Nelson said it is City Council's job to look at each funding request individually.
"There's a lot of good causes," he said, "so, those are the hard calls to make."
