Woodbury Village will soon undergo a $7 million renovation that will transform the look of one of the city’s oldest shopping centers.

The multi-phase project will start with Woodbury Village Green, which is the area housing Xperience Fitness, Party City and the Tile Shop.

Work to remodel the center includes replacing roofs, changing colors, putting new sidewalk benches and bringing the entire architecture up to today’s standards.

“It’s really to enhance the look of the center, bring it a little more up-to-date,” said Hans Rasmussen, president of Robert Muir Company, owner of the complex. “Some of the elements were kind of dated because of when it was designed.”

With large retailers like Total Wine and More and Byerly’s joining the other part of Woodbury Village, company officials say the work will bring it full circle.

Work on the larger section of Woodbury Village, which includes Target, Kohl’s, Total Wine and Byerly’s, will be done next summer.

The Shoppes at Woodbury Village, which is the building anchored by Chipotle and Noodles and Company, will also get a facelift as part of the process.

Woodbury Village was built in 1991 followed by Woodbury Village Green in 1994.

The center has always been called Woodbury Village Green based on its trim color, but most shoppers didn’t realize it had its own identity from the other shops, Rasmussen said.

Part of Woodbury Village went through a remodel with a solar system in 2006. But company officials say this upcoming renovation will be much bigger.

“It was a minor update compared to what we’re doing here,” said Rick Schroeder, vice president of construction.

In addition to Total Wine and More and Byerly’s, Woodbury Village will also add a men’s and women’s clothing store called “Rue 21,” which has locations in Eden Prairie, Maplewood and Stillwater along with a few others across the state.

Rue 21 will be located in a vacant space next to Kohl’s.
