3 men accused of Woodbury robbery
A Woodbury party allegedly gave way to a violent robbery, leaving one male injured and three others charged with felonies.
The suspects, St. Paul Park resident Kyle Elwell was charged with simple robbery. Keaton Eric Miller, of Woodbury, and Cottage Grove resident Ronzell Damar Richey were both charged with aiding and abetting simple robbery.
According to a criminal complaint, a resident in the 8300 block of Russell Avenue had friends over April 5 at his home while his parents were out of town.
One of the people the resident invited was Miller, who arrived with two others, later identified as Richey and Elwell.
“They came in and the next thing I know is I’m getting beat,” the resident told police after the incident.
According to the complaint:
The resident was punched from behind by Richey as he attempted to prevent Miller and Elwell from going upstairs into the home. Richey continued to beat the resident, who was later pulled up the stairs to his parents’ bedroom.
It was there that Elwell and Richey beat the resident for not knowing the combination to a safe in the room.
The resident called police at 4:37 a.m., where police found him with visible injuries. He was later hospitalized with injuries to the head and shoulder.
The suspects were unable to take the safe due to its weight, but made off with “handfuls of jewelry” and “hundreds of dollars” from the bedroom.
The resident described Miller as leader of the robbery.
Police caught up with the Miller and Elwell later in the day during a traffic stop, where they were arrested. In an interview with police, Miller admitted to going through the bedroom looking for valuables to steal. Elwell admitted to being at the party, but not to participating in the robbery, while Richey admitted to the assault.
A juvenile male whose house the suspects went to after the alleged robbery told police that he could hear one of them say “we almost had the safe.”
Elwell makes his initial court appearance at 9 a.m. July 9, while Miller’s next hearing will be Sept. 11. Richey makes his initial appearance July 3.
