2014 Spring Preview: Woodbury girls golf team returns four of six top golfers
The Woodbury girls golf team will be focused on the little things this season in hopes of improving on a solid 2013.
Woodbury returns four of its top six golfers from last year’s squad, which finished in third place in the Suburban East Conference’s final standings.
In the Section 3AAA tournament, Woodbury finished in sixth place on the first day of the two-day tournament, with a 355 score – six strokes back of the cut .
In the two-day section tournament, the top five teams advance to the second day along with the top 10 individuals not from the top five teams. On day two, the top team and the top five individuals not on the section championship club qualify for the state tournament.
Four members of the Royals moved on to the second day of sections, individually – 2013 graduate Katie Moore, Jessie Caron and Annemarie Fisher, who are now sophomores, and Kailey Hakes, who is a senior on the team this year.
Fisher and Hakes had the Royals’ top score on the first day with matching 87’s. Moore, who was a state entrant in 2012, shot an 88 on the first day, while Caron carded a 93. However, the Woodbury golfers were unable to finish in the top five after the second round in order to advance to the state tourney.
Hakes, Fisher and Kristina Swanson, who are team captains this season, will return to help lead the Royals this year, along with Bailey Misura.
Woodbury also brings in six new golfers this season.
“We have a lot of beginning golfers on the team,” Den Herder said. “It will be exciting to see how much they grow during the season and their impact on the team.”
East Ridge brings back every golfer from its Suburban East Conference championship team and is expected to be the team to beat in the SEC again this season. East Ridge, Eastview, Rosemount and Apple Valley should be the Royals’ main competition in the section. The section tournament will be a Bunker Hills both days this year, which is different from last year, when the first day was at Phalen Golf Course and the second day was at Bunker Hills.
Woodbury starts the season on April 14 with a conference meet at Stillwater Country Club.
