It's a new beginning for the Woodbury girls lacrosse team.

Taylor Deetjen takes over as head coach of the Royals this spring for Megan Ahlers, who lead Woodbury in its first-ever season as a solo program in 2012. Woodbury had been a cooperative program in the past with Park and East Ridge, before breaking off after the 2011 season.

"As a brand new coach to the program, I couldn't be more blessed to be a part of such an awesome school and community," Deetjen said. "We are planning to grow our program and work towards being a real threat in the Suburban East Conference."

This spring, Woodbury will be lead on the field by team captains Anna McKeown and Brittany Moreno.

Woodbury was 1-10 in its first year on its own, with its lone win coming over SEC opponent Hastings. The Royals' 2012 season came to an end with a 24-1 loss to conference and section power Cretin-Derham Hall in the first round of the playoffs.

"Loses are a way of learning," Deetjen said. "So every loss that happened or will happen, we will strive to learn from our mistakes and keep improving."

This year, Cretin-Derham Hall, Roseville and Stillwater - who were all 8-1 in conference play - are expected to again lead the way in the SEC.

Stillwater will also likely be the team to beat in the new-look Section 4. Other tough section teams will likely be Mahtomedi, Park and White Bear Lake.

Woodbury kicks off the season at Forest Lake on Monday, April 22. Other key games include: at home against Park on Wednesday, May 1, at East Ridge on Monday, May 20, and a pair of games against section foe Tartan, who is new to girls lacrosse this season, on April 25, at Tartan and on May 23, at Woodbury High School.

"We are excited to play Tartan and it is always a pleasure to play East Ridge," Deetjen said.
