2013 Fall Sports Preview: New coach takes reins of Woodbury volleyball team
There will be a fresh look this season on the Woodbury High School volleyball court.
Of the 31 names on this year’s varsity roster, just five are seniors — Carley Engfer, Emily Larson, Erin Swansson, Makensie Kincade and Monica Johnson.
The team will look to improve on an 8-14 record from a year ago.
Schubring, who is joined by assistant coach Michelle Graham, called the 2013 season a “rebuilding session” where players will focus on passing in order to build other strengths.
“As a new coach at Woodbury High School, I am looking forward to building and cultivating a culture of hard work, communication and strength,” she said.
Schubring said the team already has several pieces in place for success; she named “unity, great setting hands work ethic” and versatility among the Royals’ strengths. Areas of focus will include maintaining a consistent tempo throughout the course of games.
Some new faces to watch include Klein Johnson, a freshman setter, Cameron Frost, a sophomore setter, and sophomore mid-hitters Taylor Nelson and Katie Schultze.
Schubring said big match-ups this year should include matches against Stillwater, East Ridge and Cretin-Derham Hall.
She picked Stillwater and Cretin to be the top two teams in the Suburban East Conference, followed by Woodbury, Roseville and East Ridge. In Section 4AAA, Schubring sees Cretin, Roseville, North St. Paul and Woodbury as the strongest contenders.
