2013 Fall Sports Preview: Deep run ahead for young Woodbury girls tennis squad?
Departures from the Class of 2013 will be missed on the Woodbury girls tennis team, but new coach Michael Moran doesn’t think it leaves this year’s team any worse for the wear.
“Nothing detrimental,” Moran said. “We didn’t lose much as far as skill level or talent.”
Looking to step up for this year’s Royals team are senior singles players Katie Kreibich and Taylor Monkman.
“They’ve been playing a lot now for about three years,” the coach said. “It’s nice and reassuring to have steady players at the top spots.”
He said sophomore Brooke Hays will also be among the team’s top singles talent.
Kreibich and Monkman will be joined as co-captains with fellow seniors Shanna Stevenson and Greta Eisenrich, who look to be among Woodbury’s top doubles players.
“They’ve been there before,” Moran said of Stevenson and Eisenrich. “They know what to do.”
Moran will be counting on the seniors to provide leadership to the team’s large contingent of underclassmen; 17 of Woodbury’s of the 32 varsity roster slots are occupied this year by underclassmen, including two seventh graders and three eighth graders.
Among the underclassmen, Moran highlighted ninth grader Mackenzie Schurhamer, who he dubbed “an up and comer.”
