WOODBURY — Less than three weeks after they don a cap and gown, twins Kate and Anna Sawyer of Woodbury will be marching in formation at separate military service academies.

Anna Sawyer has accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland. Kate Sawyer has accepted an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The East Ridge High School seniors graduate June 3. Both have to report to their respective schools June 28 for "I-Day," which stands for Induction Day at USNA and In-processing Day at USAFA.

At East Ridge, the sisters competed on the school debate team for four years, ran cross-country and applied their knowledge of math and science as members of the robotics team, the East Ridge Robotic Ominous Raptors, or ERRORS. The team designed, programmed and built robots that they jockeyed in regional and state tournaments from Duluth to Detroit.

Before being considered for admittance to the Air Force or Naval academy, applicants must secure a nomination, usually from a member of Congress. Each elected official is limited to how many students they can nominate each year, however, which makes the selection process extremely competitive.

Anna and Kate Sawyer have both earned black belts in Taekwondo from Excel Martial Arts in Woodbury and have volunteered in the summer youth program at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Oakdale. Anna studied with the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program and played soccer on the St. Croix soccer club C2 team for five years.
