'Hoffy's' gun shop seeks more exposure by moving to Woodbury

A hobby turned into an everyday job for a Woodbury resident who recently opened his own business in the city.

"Even as a little kid I always studied guns before I could own them," Dan Hofmeister said.

Hofmeister moved his gun shop "Hoffy's Shooting Supplies" from Lake Elmo to Woodbury this summer, with an array of long guns and handguns to sell.

"A lot of people from this area hunt," he said. "We wanted a spot with more exposure. Most of our clients come from the Woodbury area."

The new business is tucked in next door to a nail salon and MGM Liquor off of Valley Creek Road on Woodlane Drive. A big sign that says "Guns" is hung outside the building until permanent signs are done.

Hofmeister said he specializes in reloading supplies and tools, which saves a lot of money over buying ammunition already loaded.

In addition to buying, selling, trading and consigning firearms, Hoffy's does gun transfers for those purchasing their guns online and needing a place to pick them up.

After receiving his federal firearm license, Hofmeister was ready to open in Woodbury about two months ago.

An avid bird hunter himself, his knowledge of guns and firearms has increased over the years - he formerly worked at Gander Mountain and Sportsman's Warehouse where he learned a lot about the business.

"It's a hobby. I just turned a hobby into work," he said.

Hoffy's Shooting Supplies conducts its own background checks with the FBI. Prospective firearms buyers are required to have a permit to purchase.

Hofmeister said most of his customers pass the FBI background check on the spot and only about 1 percent are denied the purchase.

Hofmeister is not planning to expand the store into something like Gander Mountain or Sportsman's Warehouse, but he hopes to open up more locations in Woodbury.

"There is more people in Woodbury, I'll be able to draw more customers especially from the surrounding cities," he said. "I will always have a store here in Woodbury."
