Edina Realty Foundation cell phone drive

In honor of "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week," Nov. 9 to 15, the Edina Realty Foundation is organizing its first cell phone drive to benefit the homeless.

Used cell phones and phone adapters can be dropped off at Edina Realty's Woodbury branch located at 520 Commons Drive.

More than 125 million wireless phones will be discarded this year, and this electronic waste is a growing environmental concern.

"Donating your old phone is not only the 'green' thing to do, it also helps homeless people in our community," said Susan Cowsert, Edina Realty Foundation manager.

Cowsert said that for every cell phone donated, the foundation will earn from 50 cents to $1, and the proceeds will be donated to homeless-related causes.

The Edina Realty Foundation is partnering with the Wireless Alliance, a cell phone recycling company that works with non-profit organizations to collect, resell and recycle cellular equipment.

The Edina Realty Foundation supports organizations that provide housing and related services such as counseling and medical care to homeless children, individuals and families. Since its inception in 1996, the Foundation has given out more than $5 million in grants to organizations.
