UPDATE (Sept. 2016): City Council approves Woodbury Costco
The retailer Costco Wholesale is still expected to come to Woodbury but not by October, as previously planned.
Last December, the retailer announced plans to build a 163,571-square-foot building northeast of Tamarack Road and Weir Drive. At the time, a Costco representative said that if all went according to schedule, construction would start in May and be completed by October. But plans did not go according to schedule.
As part of the land being developed by Costco is near watershed, the plans had to be reviewed by the Ramsey-Washington Watershed District. The watershed district required several modifications to the original plans before the project could move forward.
Since the Costco plan has to be modified, Woodbury Senior Planner Eric Searles said, the company will have to submit the modified plans to the city before the development can move forward.
“They are working on the re-submittal package,” Searles said. “They continue to pursue the development application.”
The new plans will have to go through the development process, Searles said, which includes review by both the Woodbury Planning Commission and the Woodbury City Council. Once development plans are received by the city, it typically takes about 60 days before those plans are put before the planning commission, he said.
Searles expects the plans to go before the planning commission and city council by mid- to late summer. He could not say exactly when those meetings might be scheduled.
For sure, Costco will not be opening in October.
“The best-case scenario would be opening in 2017, pending full city review,” Searles said.
