Karate studio launches Woodbury location

USA Karate students demonstrated their specialties during grand opening ceremonies June 21.

USA Karate is kicking it again in Woodbury.

After several years of dormancy in the community, the Twin Cities-based martial arts school has returned to Woodbury, where it is now housed in the Tamarack Hills shopping center.

The business held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, June 21, as part of grand opening ceremonies, where students demonstrated elaborate and choreographed martial arts routines to members of the local business community.

Until opening the Woodbury location, USA Karate's studios were mainly located in the west metro.

"We're excited you decided to look to the east side," Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens told USA Karate leaders at the grand opening event.

USA Karate founder Pat Worley said his brand of karate -- marshaled at the Woodbury location by owner Kathryn Anderson -- centers on developing "healthy body and mind."

Anderson began karate instruction at age 10 and has been an instructor for four years.

"She is very qualified," Worley said, "and great with kids."

USA Karate focuses on an "I-can" attitude, Worley explained. While self defense is a component of the instruction, he said the larger goals for students are setting -- and achieving -- goals and developing discipline.

Worley said the Tamarack Hills location presents "a unique little shopping center" that includes Akita restaurant, an Army recruiting center and health-related businesses.

"Woodbury's a great location," he said. "A really good community."
